Aggregates and Building Materials

These are some of our most commonly used aggregates and building materials.

If you'd like to find out more about any of the materials discussed on this page, or have a general enquiry about your job or requirements, please feel free to contact us directly - we'd be happy to help.

 Building Sand

  • Used predominantly for mixing with cement to make building mortar.
  • Mortar is usually mixed in a cement mixer at a ratio of 3 or 4 units of sand for every 1 unit of cement.
  • Available loose or in tonne bags.

 Concrete Sand

  • Similar to building sand, but with slightly larger particles up to about 6mm
  • Used as fine aggregate in mixing concrete along with larger aggregate, cement and water
  • Used as bedding material for laying turf, slabs and block paviors
  • Used for fine levelling over turf and grass
  • Sometimes referred to as Sharp Sand
  • Available loose or in tonne bags

 20mm Gravel

  • Used for bedding and covering sewer pipes
  • Used as coarse aggregate in concrete mixing
  • Used as free draining material in field drains and soakaways
  • Used as a low cost gravel surface
  • Available loose or in tonne bags

 Sand & Gravel Mix

  • Mixed at the quarry, this material combines Concrete Sand and 20mm Aggregate
  • The 20mm aggregate in the mix will either be rounded stones (gravel) or angular stones (chips) depending on which quarry produces it
  • Sometimes referred to as Ballast
  • Can be used as a combined aggregate and mixed with cement and water to make concrete
  • Available loose or in tonne bags

 Red Chips

  • Decorative chips in red granite, nominal 20mm size
  • Used for chipped areas in gardens, paths and driveways
  • Available loose or in tonne bags

 Quartz Gravel

  • Decorative gravel in mix of white and buff coloured stones, nominal 20mm size
  • Used for chipped areas in gardens, paths and landscape areas
  • Available loose or in tonne bags

 Sky Marble

  • Decorative chips in white marble, nominal 20mm size
  • Used for chipped areas in gardens, paths and driveways
  • Available loose or in tonne bags

 Spey Chips

  • Decorative chips in mix of cream and buff coloured stones, nominal 20mm size
  • Used for chipped areas in gardens, paths and driveways
  • Available loose or in tonne bags

Type 1

  • Sometimes referred to as Hardcore or Bottoming
  • Used to form the sub-base of driveways, patios and hard standings
  • Graded aggregates from 40mm down to dust
  • Usually levelled then compacted with a vibrating roller or Whacker plate
  • Available loose or in tonne bags

 Road Planings

  • Sometimes referred to as Hardcore or Bottoming
  • Used to form the sub-base of driveways, patios and hard standings
  • Recycled material from the road planing process
  • Aggregates tend to be black or grey as they are bitumen coated
  • Aggregates are generally 60mm down to dust with occasional larger lumps
  • Usually levelled then compacted with a vibrating roller or Whacker plate
  • This material has excellent binding qualities
  • Available loose or in tonne bags

Rocks up to 2 Tonne Weight

  • Used to form simple and natural looking retaining structures by piecing rocks on top of each other against a battered embankment
  • Used as erosion protection at riversides (Armour Rock)
  • Used to block vehicular access to industrial estates etc.
  • Used as protective vehicle stops at edges of embankments, riversides etc.
  • Larger rocks are very difficult to handle and must be mechanically lifted. We can carry out installation work if required.

 Topsoil

  • Topsoil is the thin layer of organic soil covering most lowland fields
  • Topsoil cannot be produced, it’s subject to availability locally
  • Varies in quality, moisture content, stone content and consistency
  • Used for planting and forming grassed areas
  • Contains the organic matter required for plant growth
  • Can be bought screened (stones larger than 50mm removed) or as dug
  • Available loose or in tonne bags

 Reclaimed Materials

  • We encourage recycling wherever possible and keep some stocks in our yard
  • Call us to enquire about recycled materials to suit your project
